Submitting Older Work

Since it has been brought up quite a few times but not in the most conspicuous of places, I thought I'd better do a full blog post on the issue of submitting pictures older than December of 2006 to help ensure that everyone is aware of the nature of my policy.

In the contest rules, you'll find the word "please" used twice. The two rules with which I've used this word are not so much rules as they are requests. That is, if you submitted a picture that did not adhere to them (but did meet all the others), it would most likely still be admitted. However, do not take this to mean that I will give entries that do not conform to the requests equal consideration to those that do. The requests stem from my personal preference, after all, and my preferences will play a strong role in my judging. I want things to be fair and thus have every intention of taking all factors into consideration when deciding on the winners, including detail, difficulty, creativity, and when the pic was made, to name a few.

So, yeah, no need to worry! I promise to do my best to ensure that each entry receives its due credit. You can draw Link with confidence!

I think you should enforce the "no pictures older than december 2006" rule. It's unfair to those of us who are putting time and effort into drawing for this contest (and you paying for a Wii deserves effort in return), to have others who drew a picture way back when just send it in as their entry. If they want to win a Wii, they should take some time out to create something new. That is the whole point of this contest, isn't it?

Aw c'mon, try to have a little faith in me here! There is a preference for new work, definitely, but the contest's purpose is to not only inspire that but to recognize pics that already exist and get them further distributed to the fans. I personally feel it's better to allow them at a slight disadvantage than to prohibit them altogether. I've already received quite a few absolutely beautiful pieces that I wouldn't have if older work had not been permitted.

all my works were in the last 4 months and I think the quality is just fine for the time frame that was given me.

In continuing the above discussion, I'm afraid I still don't see your logic. By allowing anyone to dig through their work and submit any old piece, it removes the incentive to create more fanart. And all the good artists out there can submit fantastic older work that will discourage people from wanting to try and outdo them. Yes, I understand you want to see fanart you may not have seen before (it is your contest afterall), but perhaps you should change the prize structure. New artwork gets the chance for a Wii, and already existing fanart gets a chance for the game. That way, you'd keep both options in the contest, but it would give artists an incentive to draw Link again, rather than be lazy. I think winning the Wii deserves some effort in making Link live again. Recirculating old stuff may be worth a game, though.

Well, anyone feel like proving this person wrong with a fresh, crispy, cream-filled, cocoa-glazed masterpiece? --Oh, sorry, I guess I've got dessert on the brain!

yes, i agree with them, you should change the rules for the newer art, not the old. it seems unfair. i even feel discouraged. ~_~ *not to be mean or anything*

Okay, in all seriousness, I understand your concern, but the decision has already been given thorough consideration and is not open for negotiation. When I started this contest I asked everyone to trust me to actually award the winners with a Wii and TP; now I'm asking that you trust me to use a fair judging process to determine the winners. I'm sorry, but it's impossible to please everyone, and I simply can't afford to keep changing things every time an objection is raised. I appreciate your understanding.

You sound like you're just trying to be fair, I think, but the "new art" thing sounds like a good idea.

Also, when you judge, it'll be on more than how prettied up the picture is, right? Like, I mean, if someone does the world's most amazing CG job, but Link's just standing there, doing absolutely nothing, it won't win over one that's really creative but less well drawn, right? (Some people claim to be terrible with color, for one thing. XD)

It's your contest, though, so what you want goes! I mean, you -are- the one supplying the prizes. :B

The entries look super, though. =D

...I wish there was an "Edit" button. XD

Ignore that first line! *flail*

You say to draw Link masterpiece with all confidence, but you really say to not bother, just send in old work. Do you not want to see what old artist can do now, or you want old work? It is not a objection, just observation. Sorry for my english.

And to the guy who.... was dissing the CG job... I would like you to sit there and tell that to someone who sat there for 2 days painting something like that. It takes even more time and effert to paint something then it does a measly sketch. Whatch what you say you could of totally dissed someone that spent hours on end painting something. Weather it is just a portrtait or not... if its a good portrait and it looks better then it trumps yours ....deal with it.

Let's not bicker, now. The person who mentioned the CG was just using that as an example, not referring to a specific picture. I'm sure he or she did not mean to insult anyone.

I don't want to see this escalate any further, so comments on this blog entry are now locked. Take a breather, enjoy the little word search, and move on, please!
